Shakespeare, Webster, Massinger, and Beaumont and Fletcher drew on Belleforest’s work for various plays. In particular, Shakespeare used Belleforest for Much Ado About Nothing, Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, and Twelfth Night.
These two volumes contain a selection of 36 stories from Matteo Bandello’s collection of 214 Italian novelle that Belleforest translated into French.
Format: Octavo. 2 volumes. 287, [1]; 312 [i. e., 299], [1] leaves, including final blanks. 165 x 99 mm.
Binding: 19th-century crimson morocco by Chambolle-Duru, all edges gilded.
Provenance: Morocco book labels of the great Spanish bibliophile Isidoro Fernández (1878-1963) on pastedowns, his gilt supra-libros embossed in gold on covers.
USTC lists only four known copies, not including the present one.
