Volume I: 17th-century ownership of an Arthur Satrey dated 27 February 1577 on dedication leaf. Several manuscript annotations throughout, including "I my selfe did see a tooth of a man wch was as brode as my leafte hand and had diverse cagges as long as halfe my 4 fyngers in 1562 at London: and his shynne bone being one ende on the ground the other on the end did touche my shoulder. A.S." in the margin next to a passage on St. Augustine on giants (fol. 4).
"The Historie of Englande" (caption title) begins new register and pagination. "The Historie of Scotlande" has separate title page, pagination, and register. On A1r of the latter register this title is repeated in a caption title and pagination recommences. "The Historie of Irelande ... vnto the yeare 1509. Collected by Raphaell Holinshed, and continued till the yeare 1547. by Richarde Stanyhurst" has separate title page, foliation, and register. "The historie of Irelande" (caption title) has separate pagination and register.
Title-pages to 3 parts within woodcut borders (the first cut to size and laid down but showing woodcut Holinshed arms on verso), black letter, double column, woodcut illustrations in the text, lacks final leaf of "faultes", without cancels E6-8 in third part, small burn hole to fol. 4 of first part, small piece torn away with some loss of text to pp.57/8, and side-note of pp.97/8 of second part, light marginal dampstaining to approximately 30 leaves, some marginal annotation by an early hand (mostly in upper margin of the section on "The Historie of Englande", but identifying one illustration as "Solway Water in Scotlande" with 2 further references to Solway on final leaf, some shaved), later calf preserving part of contemporary English blindstamped calf sides, worn, joints weakened.
F7 of the last series is in the corrected state with the recto beginning "the Belweathers" and catchword "impouerish”
Volume II: Royal binding featuring King George III's coat of arms in gilt to the covers. Lacking all before 1165 but complete through 1876, the end of the text. Lacking the double-page map of Edinburgh, as usual. The Index ends at “Swedeners,” lacking leaves thereafter.
A leaf foliated 1593 is inserted after p. 1592. ⁵4O3 has the headline in the uncorrected state "Queene Marie." (cancellandum has "Queene Mary."). ⁵4X1 has the original recto catchword "buried" (cancellandum has "the"). "A Table seruing vnto both parts of the Chronicles of England" (caption title) has separate register.
Rebacked; newer pastedowns and endpapers. Red page edges. Small repair to the first page present; some thumbing and resultant edgewear throughout, nothing major and with no text affected. Final leaf with some creasing and tears towards the gutter. A few small stains and blemishes.
